Mumbai on Alert: BMC Sets Up Special Ward and Airport Screening to Combat MPox Threat

In response to the global health concerns surrounding MPox, also known as monkeypox, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken proactive steps to safeguard Mumbai. A 14-bed ward has been established at Seven Hills Hospital in Andheri’s Marol area to isolate and treat any suspected cases of MPox. This precautionary measure follows directives from both the Union and Maharashtra state governments, despite no confirmed cases being reported in Mumbai so far.

Precautionary Measures and Screening at the Airport

The BMC has initiated comprehensive screening procedures at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport for passengers arriving from regions where MPox has been detected, particularly African countries, as well as Pakistan and Sweden, where recent cases have emerged. A health information desk has also been set up at the airport to assist passengers and provide necessary information.

These steps come after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared MPox a public health emergency of international concern, prompting global vigilance. The BMC, in coordination with the Airport Health Officer (APHO), held a joint meeting to assess the situation and streamline the response plan.

No Need for Panic, Say Officials

The BMC has urged citizens not to panic, emphasizing that the reserved beds at Seven Hills Hospital are purely a precautionary measure. The civic body reassured Mumbaikars that more beds could be added if the situation demands. The health authorities are fully prepared to handle any potential cases and prevent the spread of the virus.

Understanding MPox: Symptoms and Risks

MPox is caused by the monkeypox virus, a member of the Orthopoxvirus genus. It presents with symptoms like skin rashes, mucosal lesions, fever, headache, muscle aches, and swollen lymph nodes, which can last from two to four weeks. While the disease has primarily been reported in Africa, the recent spread to other countries has heightened global concern.

As the world grapples with the resurgence of viral outbreaks, Mumbai remains vigilant. The BMC's swift actions in setting up a dedicated ward and implementing airport screenings underscore the city's commitment to public health and safety. Citizens are encouraged to stay informed and follow guidelines as the situation evolves.
